Talking about hateful spaces and 'free speech' (incl. alt-right and nazis) Mostrar mais
A reminder that I will never refer to alt-right spaces on their own terms, like 'free speech' or whatever bullshit catchphrase they have, and neither should you.
1. Nazis used the phrase 'free speech' frequently during their rise as a get out of jail free card just like white supremacists and the like are today. Taking this phrase at face value is **provably** a con.
2. Free speech is not absolute, different kinds of speech cancel out others (ie hate speech, loud assholes, threats, etc.), it's always about what kinds of conduct and ideas you want to cultivate and protect. If someone wants to enable hate speech, you know what their priorities are where their allegiances lie.
3. Alt-righters don't genuinely care about free speech from their own words. Richard Spencer admitted that he's just using it as a vehicle and that he does not actually advocate it in a public stream chat: http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/richard-spencer-the-alt-right-is-not-pro-free-speech/
